Questions & Answers about Тот, кто ценит взаимовыручку и энтузиазм, всегда достигает успеха.
Since this lesson is about "Если бы не", how would we use it to say "If it weren't for mutual assistance, he wouldn't achieve success" based on this sentence?
You would say: Если бы не взаимовыручка, он не достигал бы успеха. Notice how взаимовыручка is in the Nominative case here, exactly as required by the Если бы не structure. In our original sentence, however, it takes the Accusative case ending (взаимовыручку) because it is the direct object of the verb ценит (values).
Why does the sentence start with Тот, кто instead of just Кто?
To make general statements like "He who...", "The one who...", or "Anyone who...", Russian relies on the paired structure Тот, кто. The demonstrative pronoun Тот (that one) sits in the main clause and acts as an anchor for the relative pronoun кто (who). When stating a general truth like this, both parts of the sentence use masculine, singular verbs (ценит, достигает), regardless of the actual gender or number of the people involved.
Why is успех (success) in the Genitive case (успеха) at the end of the sentence?
Because of the verb достигает. The verb достигать / достичь (to reach, to achieve) strictly requires its object to be in the Genitive case. This rule applies whether you are talking about reaching a physical destination (like a shore) or achieving an abstract goal (like success or an agreement).
Взаимовыручку is quite a mouthful. What are the root parts of this word?
