Questions & Answers about Летом мы загораем на море.
Why is Летом in the instrumental case?
In Russian, seasons and parts of the day use the instrumental case to mean 'in the [season/time]'. So лето (summer) becomes летом (in summer). You will see this exact same pattern with words like утром (in the morning) or зимой (in winter).
Why do we use на instead of в for 'at the seaside'?
When talking about being at the sea, a river, or a beach, Russian traditionally uses на with the prepositional case. You can think of it as being out 'on' the coast or shore. Because of this rule, 'at the seaside' or 'at the sea' is always на море.
Why does море look like it didn't change for the prepositional case?
Море (sea) is a neuter noun ending in -е. To form the prepositional case, most neuter nouns take an -е ending. Since the word already ends in -е, the spelling remains exactly the same as its dictionary form!
What aspect is the verb загораем?
It is an imperfective verb coming from the infinitive загорать (to sunbathe). We use the imperfective aspect here because sunbathing is a habitual, repeated action that describes what we generally do every summer.
