Questions & Answers about Вы не подскажете мне, где здесь выход?
Why is "мне" in the Dative case here?
The verb подсказать (to prompt / to help out with information) acts as a verb of assistance. Like many verbs of helping, advising, or giving, it requires the Dative case for the person receiving the help. Therefore, "to me" is мне, used directly without any prepositions.
Why is there a "не" in this sentence if the English translation is "Could you..."?
In Russian, phrasing a request as a negative question is a very common and polite way to ask for help or information. It softens the request, making it sound less demanding, much like saying "You wouldn't happen to know..." or "Could you..." in English.
Why use подскажете instead of скажете?
While скажете just means "will you say" or "will you tell", подскажете comes from подсказать, which specifically means to prompt, give a hint, or help someone out with a piece of information. Using подсказать sounds much more natural and polite when you are asking a stranger for directions or advice.
Why does the sentence use both где (where) and здесь (here)?
Где здесь... is a very common idiomatic phrase in Russian when asking for locations. It literally translates to "Where here is...", but it is the equivalent of asking "Where is the [X] around here?" in English.
