Questions & Answers about Мы организуем вечеринку, потому что десятого мая две тысячи двадцать пятого года нашему клубу будет десять лет.
Why are the words in the date десятого мая and пятого года in the Genitive case?
In Russian, to say that something happens on a specific full date, you put the ordinal number for the day, the month, and the ordinal number for the year into the Genitive case. You don't need a preposition like "on" in English; the Genitive case endings alone carry the meaning of "on the tenth of..."
Why isn't every word in the year две тысячи двадцать пятого changed to the Genitive case?
For years in Russian, only the very last number is an ordinal number (meaning "the 25th" year). The preceding numbers (две тысячи двадцать) remain regular base numbers and don't change their endings here. Because only the last word acts as the ordinal adjective, only that last word takes the Genitive ending (пятого) to match the date structure.
Why is the club in the Dative case (нашему клубу) instead of the Nominative case?
In Russian, age is always expressed using the Dative case for the person or thing getting older. You are literally saying "to our club will be ten years." You have likely seen this with people, like in Мне двадцать лет (I am twenty years old), and it applies exactly the same way to objects, cities, or organizations.
Why do we use the word лет instead of a form of год at the end of the sentence?
