Мы обычно кладём одеяло на кровать.

Questions & Answers about Мы обычно кладём одеяло на кровать.

Why do we use кладём instead of ставим or лежит here?
кладём comes from класть, which means to put something down in a flat, horizontal position. A blanket (одеяло) is flat and lies horizontally. If the blanket were already resting on the bed, we would use the state verb лежит. We do not use ставим (to stand something up) because a blanket cannot stand vertically!
Why is it на кровать (Accusative) and not на кровати (Prepositional)?
Because класть describes an action of moving or placing something to a destination. With verbs of positioning (like putting, hanging, or standing something somewhere), we use на or в plus the Accusative case to show the direction. If we were describing where the blanket is already resting, we would use the Prepositional case: Одеяло лежит на кровати.
The infinitive is класть, so why does the с disappear in кладём?
Класть is an irregular verb. In the present tense, the stem changes to клад- (I put is я кладу, you put is ты кладёшь, we put is мы кладём). It is a very common verb, so you just have to memorize this shift!
Why do not we use the perfective verb положим if the action of putting the blanket down gets finished?
The word обычно (usually) tells us this is a repeated, habitual action. For habitual actions, we always use the imperfective aspect, which is кладём here. Положим is perfective and would mean we will put as a one-time completed action in the future.
Why did neither одеяло nor кровать change endings for the Accusative case?
Both words are acting as direct objects or destinations, but they keep their dictionary forms. Одеяло is a neuter noun, and inanimate neuter nouns look exactly the same in the Accusative case as they do in the Nominative. Кровать is a feminine noun ending in a soft sign (-ь), and these also do not change their endings in the Accusative case.
