Questions & Answers about Я полностью забыл текст, и теперь мне нечего сказать.
How does the grammar of мне нечего сказать work?
This sentence uses a special structure that translates to "there is nothing to [do]." The formula is: Dative subject (мне, "to me") + нечего ("there is nothing") + Infinitive verb (сказать, "to say"). Notice there is no verb for "to have" — the combination of the Dative case and нечего naturally creates the meaning "I have nothing to say."
Wait, isn't "nothing" ничего? What is the difference between нечего and ничего?
нечего (stressed on the first syllable: нЕчего) specifically means "there is nothing to..." and is used with a Dative subject and an infinitive. It does not use a double negative. If you wanted to use ничего (stressed on the last syllable: ничегО), you would need a Nominative subject and a double negative, like this: я ничего не могу сказать (I cannot say anything).
Why use the perfective verb сказать here instead of the imperfective говорить?
You are talking about a single, specific action you cannot complete right now because you forgot the words. сказать (perfective) emphasizes the result of saying that specific thing. If you used говорить, it would sound more like "I have nothing to talk about" in a general, ongoing sense.
Why use теперь instead of сейчас for the word "now"?
