Questions & Answers about Она сказала, что сама справилась с проблемой.
Why is the pronoun missing before сама in the second part of the sentence?
In Russian, when the subject is already obvious from the first half of the sentence, it is often dropped in the second half. Since сама (herself) is feminine, it is clear it refers to она, making что она сама unnecessary, though not technically wrong.
Why do we use сама here instead of the reflexive pronoun себя?
Сама is an emphatic pronoun used to stress that someone did an action independently, meaning 'she did it on her own'. Себя is used when the person is the object of their own action, like 'she washed herself'. Because she is the subject who independently handled the problem, we use сама.
Why is the problem written as с проблемой instead of just a direct object?
The verb справиться (to handle / to cope) requires the preposition с (with) followed by the Instrumental case. So, 'handled the problem' acts more like 'coped with the problem', giving us the Instrumental form с проблемой.
Why is the verb справилась in the perfective aspect here?
We use the perfective aspect because she successfully finished dealing with the problem, focusing on the result. The imperfective form справлялась would mean she was in the process of handling it, without telling us if she actually solved it yet.
