Questions & Answers about Завтра к нам приедут гости из столицы.
Why use приедут instead of придут?
приедут is a form of приехать, which means to arrive by transport. Since the guests are coming from the capital, it is assumed they are traveling by train, car, or plane. придут would mean they are arriving on foot!
Wait, doesn't приедут look like a present tense verb? How does it mean 'will arrive'?
It is actually the future tense. приехать is a perfective verb, meaning it focuses on the completed result of arriving. When you conjugate perfective verbs using normal present tense endings, they automatically talk about the future.
Why is 'to our place' translated as к нам?
When you are talking about going to a person or people (rather than a physical building or city), you must use the preposition к followed by the Dative case. нам is the Dative form of мы (we).
Why does it say из столицы instead of от столицы for 'from the capital'?
To say you are coming 'out of' or 'from' a location like a city, country, or building, you use the preposition из plus the Genitive case. You generally use от when coming away from a person or the outside of an object.
