Questions & Answers about Я люблю работать этими новыми инструментами.
Why isn't there a word for "with" (like с) before этими новыми инструментами?
In English, we say "work with tools", but in Russian, when an object is the literal instrument or tool you use to do an action, you use the Instrumental case without a preposition. If you added с, it would sound like you are working alongside the tools as your coworkers!
How do we get the ending -ами for инструментами?
The dictionary form is инструмент (a masculine noun ending in a hard consonant). To make it plural in the Instrumental case, you add -ами to the hard stem.
Why does новыми end in -ыми but этими ends in -ими?
Regular adjectives with hard stems, like новый (new), take the -ыми ending in the Instrumental plural. However, the plural pronoun эти (these) declines like a soft-stem adjective, so it takes the soft ending -ими to become этими.
Why is работать (imperfective) used here instead of the perfective поработать?
After the verb любить (to love/like), you always use the imperfective infinitive. This is because you are talking about a general habit or ongoing preference, rather than a one-time completed result.
