Questions & Answers about Здесь ничто не происходит, только пустота.
Why do we use ничто here instead of the more common ничего?
In this sentence, the word nothing is the subject doing the action, so it must be in the Nominative case, which is ничто. You usually see ничего because that is the Genitive case, which is used when nothing is the object of the action or used with certain prepositions.
Why is there a не before происходит if ничто already means nothing?
Russian requires double negation. Whenever you use a negative pronoun like ничто or никто with a verb, you must also put не right before that verb. Literally, the sentence structure is: Here nothing does not happen.
What form of the verb is происходит and why?
It is the third-person singular form of the verb происходить (to happen). When ничто is the subject of a sentence, it acts as a singular neuter noun, so the verb takes the standard ending for he, she, or it.
Is the word пустота related to the adjective for empty?
Yes! The noun пустота (emptiness) comes directly from the adjective пустой (empty). Adding -ота to an adjective root is a common way in Russian to create an abstract noun, similar to adding -ness in English.
