Questions & Answers about Вчера я встречался с менеджером.
Why does the word for manager end in -ом here?
The preposition с (meaning with) requires the next word to be in the Instrumental case. Since менеджер is a masculine noun ending in a consonant, we add the ending -ом to make it менеджером.
Why does the verb встречался have -ся at the end?
The -ся ending often shows that an action is mutual. While встречал means you simply encountered someone, встречался means you had a mutual meeting with someone. This mutual verb pairs directly with с and the Instrumental case.
Does the ending of встречался tell us if the speaker is male or female?
Yes, it tells us the speaker is male. In the past tense, Russian verbs change based on the gender of the subject. A male says я встречался, while a female speaker would say я встречалась.
Do I pause between с and менеджером when speaking?
No, you should pronounce them together as if they were a single word. In Russian, short prepositions like с flow directly into the noun that follows them.
