Questions & Answers about Мой партнёр сейчас работает в офисе.
How do we know to translate работает as "is working" rather than "works"?
Russian only has one present tense, so работает can mean both "works" and "is working". The word сейчас (now) is the clue that the action is happening right at this moment, which naturally translates to the continuous English "is working".
Why is there an "-е" at the end of в офисе?
This is the Prepositional case, which is used to indicate a location. The dictionary form of the word is офис. Because it is a masculine noun ending in a consonant, we add -е to the end when we talk about being inside that location using the preposition в (in).
Why do we use мой here instead of моя?
The word for "my" must always match the gender of the noun it describes. Партнёр is a masculine noun, so we use the masculine form мой. If the word were feminine, like работа (work), you would use моя.
Is the word сейчас pronounced exactly as it is spelled?
In slow, careful speech, yes (say-CHAS). However, in everyday conversation, native Russian speakers almost always shorten it to sound like "щас" (shchas). It is good to recognize both!
