Questions & Answers about Этот журнал интересный, но я хочу прочитать роман.
Why does the sentence use этот instead of это?
Этот means "this" and must match the gender of the noun it points to. Since журнал is a masculine noun, we use the masculine form этот. You only use the neutral word это when saying "This is..." without attaching it directly to a noun, like in Это журнал (This is a magazine).
Why do we use но for "but" here instead of а?
We use но to show a direct contrast or contradiction: the magazine is interesting, but despite that, I want a novel. The conjunction а is used to simply contrast two different subjects or actions, like "I want a magazine, and/but he wants a novel."
I learned that "to read" is читать. Why does this sentence use прочитать?
Russian verbs often have two versions: one for the ongoing process and one for the completed result. Читать focuses on the process of reading, while прочитать means to read something entirely from start to finish. Here, the speaker wants to read the whole novel, so they use the completed result form.
The word роман is the object of the sentence. Why doesn't its ending change?
When a masculine noun represents a non-living thing, its object form (the accusative case) looks exactly the same as its dictionary form. Since a novel isn't alive, роман does not change its ending here.
