To build longer, more complex sentences, you can use conjunctions to contrast ideas, explain reasons, and show logical results.
Contrasting Ideas with Но
To contrast two statements, use the conjunction но (but). When connecting two complete thoughts, always place a comma before it.

Asking "Why"
Use the question word почему (why) to ask for a reason or explanation.
| Why are you choosing this boring film? | Почему ты выбираешь этот скучный фильм? |
Giving Reasons with Потому что
To answer "why" or explain the cause of something, use потому что (because). This is a two-word phrase. When it links two parts of a sentence, place a comma immediately before потому.
| We are buying this computer because it is cheap. | Мы покупаем этот компьютер, потому что он дешёвый. |
| I buy fruit because it is healthy. | Я покупаю фрукты, потому что они полезные. |
| They cannot go to the museum because they are working. | Они не могут идти в музей, потому что работают. |
Expressing Results with Поэтому
While потому что introduces the cause of an action, поэтому (so, therefore) introduces the effect or result. Notice that поэтому is written as a single word. Place a comma before it when it separates clauses.

Once you are comfortable with these conjunctions, you can chain them together to explain your decisions and debate everyday choices in a single sentence.
