Questions & Answers about Vreau să închin pentru sănătatea voastră!
The lesson is about independent să clauses for wishes. Is să închin one of those?
Not quite. Here, să închin (that I toast) depends directly on the main verb vreau (I want). An independent subjunctive wish is something you say directly to the people without a main verb, like Să fiți sănătoși! (May you be healthy!).
What does a închina mean, and is it the usual word for making a toast?
Yes, a închina means "to toast" or "to dedicate" (it can also mean to bow or worship). It is the right verb for announcing a toast. When actually clinking glasses, Romanians often use short independent subjunctive wishes like Să trăiți! (May you live long!) or just say Noroc! (Cheers!).
Why does sănătatea have the definite article -a at the end if it comes after the preposition pentru?
Normally, simple prepositions like pentru strip the definite article off the noun that follows (e.g., you would say pentru sănătate). However, because the noun is followed by the possessive adjective voastră, the noun must take the definite article to connect to it. Therefore, it becomes pentru sănătatea voastră.
Why use voastră instead of vostru here?
