Questions & Answers about Cartoful este mare și gustos.

Why is "the potato" written as a single word, cartoful?

In Romanian, the word for "the" usually attaches to the end of the noun instead of being a separate word before it. The base word for potato is cartof, which is a masculine noun. To say "the potato", you add the masculine ending -ul to get cartoful.

How do I know to use gustos instead of another form of the adjective?

Adjectives in Romanian must match the gender of the noun they describe. Since cartof is masculine, you use the masculine singular form of the adjective, which is gustos. If you were describing a feminine noun, like soup (supă), it would change to the feminine form, gustoasă.

Does the adjective mare also change if the noun is feminine?

Actually, no! While most adjectives like gustos change endings based on gender, mare is a special type of adjective. Because it ends in "-e" in its basic form, it stays exactly the same for both masculine and feminine singular nouns.
