Wine Tasting

Savor the language of viticulture with this wine-tasting lesson. We cover precise terminology for vineyards, cellars, and the tasting process itself.

The Vineyard and the Tasting

Every great wine begins at podgoria (the vineyard) and ends with degustarea (the tasting).

We visit the vineyard before we start the tasting.
Vizităm podgoria înainte să începem degustarea.

The wine's characteristics depend on soiul (the grape variety).

This vineyard has a special grape variety, so the wine is expensive.
Această podgorie are un soi special de struguri, deci vinul este scump.
We try two new varieties at the tasting.
Încercăm două soiuri noi la degustare.

Inside the Winery

Production and storage happen in crama (the winery). Here, the wine ages in butoiul (the barrel).

The winery has quite old barrels.
Crama are niște butoaie destul de vechi.
I really like the tasting at this winery.
Îmi place foarte mult degustarea la această cramă.

The Sommelier's Choice

Somelierul (the sommelier) can guide your choices. You might be offered a red, a white, or rozeul (the rosé), and you can specify if you prefer a sweet wine or one that is sec (dry).

The sommelier recommends a dry rosé.
Somelierul recomandă un roze sec.
I prefer dry wine, because it is not sweet.
Prefer vinul sec, pentru că nu este dulce.

Opening the Bottle

To finally enjoy the wine, remove dopul (the cork) using tirbușonul (the corkscrew).

The sommelier pulls out the cork with a corkscrew.
Somelierul scoate dopul cu un tirbușon.
She pulls out the cork, but the bottle is already empty.
Ea scoate dopul, dar sticla este deja goală.
Where are the corkscrews? I prefer to open the rosé.
Unde sunt tirbușoanele? Prefer să deschid rozeul.
