While and although (în timp ce, deși)

Simultaneous Actions with În timp ce

Use în timp ce (while) to connect actions happening at the exact same time.

The cook makes the soup while I clean.
Bucătarul face supa în timp ce eu fac curățenie.
We work in the old factory while they sleep.
Noi lucrăm în fabrica veche în timp ce ei dorm.

It also works when a shorter action interrupts an ongoing background action in the past:

He fell asleep while he was watching the movie.
El a adormit în timp ce se uita la film.

Expressing Contrast with Deși

To introduce a contrast or an unexpected outcome, use the conjunction deși (although / even though).

Just like in English, the deși clause can go at the beginning or in the middle of the sentence. In Romanian, you generally separate it from the main clause with a comma in either position.

Although he is guilty, he does not tell the truth.
Deși este vinovat, nu spune adevărul.
Although he has a severe illness, he always smiles.
Deși are o boală grea, el zâmbește mereu.
The cook uses a lot of garlic, although I don't like it.
Bucătarul folosește mult usturoi, deși nu îmi place.
I fell asleep early, although the neighbors were making noise.
Am adormit devreme, deși vecinii făceau zgomot.
