The Optician and Your Eyesight
When visiting the optician (opticianul), you will talk about your eyesight (vederea) and whether you are short-sighted (miop).
Let's review how to say "of a" or "to a" (the indefinite Genitive and Dative cases). For masculine singular nouns, use unui. For plural nouns of any gender, use unor.
To tell someone not to do something (the negative imperative), simply use nu followed by the infinitive form of the verb (without "a"). Pronouns can attach directly to nu with a hyphen.
Lenses and Prescriptions
Your optician will measure your diopter (dioptria) and recommend the right lens (lentila).
For feminine singular nouns, the indefinite "of a" or "to a" is unei. When using unei, the feminine noun and its adjectives change their endings (usually matching their plural forms, like lentilă → lentile and bună → bune).
When describing your lenses or glasses, make sure your adjectives match the noun's gender and number.
Frames and Materials
Next, you will choose a frame (rama). To say what something is made of, use the preposition din followed by the material, such as metal (metalul) or plastic (plasticul).
To say "of the" for a plural definite noun (like ochelarii - the glasses), attach the suffix -lor to the end of the word.
Finally, some adjectives like subțire (thin) end in -e for both masculine and feminine singular forms. However, in the feminine Genitive/Dative cases, this ending changes to -i.
