Unless and except if (în afară de cazul în care)

Let's learn how to set strict conditions and rules, using a desert survival scenario.

Survival in the arid desert is very difficult.
Supraviețuirea în deșertul arid este foarte dificilă.

Unless / Except If

To express an exception to a rule, use the phrase în afară de cazul în care. It literally translates to "outside of the case in which," functioning as "unless" or "except if."

Unlike some Romanian conjunctions, the verb following în afară de cazul în care takes the standard indicative mood, not the subjunctive.

Do not go into the desert, unless you have water.
Nu mergeți în deșert, în afară de cazul în care aveți apă.
Radu, do not venture there, unless you have the flashlight.
Radule, nu te aventura acolo, în afară de cazul în care ai lanterna.

Warning of Consequences

State a danger in the main clause, then use în afară de cazul în care to introduce the condition that prevents it.

The scorpion stings you, unless you are careful.
Scorpionul te înțeapă, în afară de cazul în care ești atent.
You suffer from dehydration, unless you drink a lot of water.
Suferi de deshidratare, în afară de cazul în care bei multă apă.

You can apply this structure to any situation where safety depends on a specific precaution:

Do not climb the dune, unless you have a plan.
Nu urca pe dună, în afară de cazul în care ai un plan.
The water is a mirage, unless you can touch it.
Apa este un miraj, în afară de cazul în care o poți atinge.
It is dangerous to venture alone, unless you have the compass.
Este periculos să te aventurezi singur, în afară de cazul în care ai busola.
