Seeking Support and Empathy
Discussing mental health requires empathy (empatia). When referring to a specific noun as the direct object of a relative clause (like "the psychologist that I chose"), Romanian uses pe care. Remember that pe care must be accompanied by an accusative pronoun that matches the object's gender and number (such as l- for a masculine singular noun).
Reflexive pronouns like ne (ourselves) or se (themselves) are frequently used in Romanian to express reciprocal actions. In these cases, it means the subjects are performing the action on each other.
Facing and Processing Trauma
To express that someone is "facing" or "confronting" an issue, we use the reflexive verb a se confrunta followed by the preposition cu (with).
When describing an action as difficult, use phrases like este greu să (it is hard to) followed by the subjunctive form of the verb, such as procesezi (you process). Below, notice how pe care is used again, this time paired with -o to match a feminine object (trauma).
Discussing Emotional Disorders
Many medical and psychological terms in Romanian are very similar to their English counterparts, making them easy to recognize.
When using adjectives like emotional (emoțional) to describe disorders (tulburări), remember that the adjectives must agree in gender and number with the noun they modify. Because tulburare is feminine, its plural adjective form becomes emoționale.
Healing and Moving Forward
A vital part of therapy is healing (a vindeca). Notice how the reciprocal reflexive se appears again below to show mutual respect between two individuals.
