The Oil Industry

Extracting the Oil

We are expanding our vocabulary to cover the industrial world of fossil fuels. We begin at the source: sonda (the well), which taps into zăcământul (the deposit) to reach petrolul (the oil).

The well extracts the oil from this deep deposit.
Sonda extrage petrolul din acest zăcământ adânc.

When discussing the raw, unrefined product, use țițeiul (the crude oil).

The extraction depends on the quality that the crude oil has.

Transport and Refining

Once extracția (the extraction) is complete, the crude oil travels through conducta (the pipeline) to rafinăria (the refinery).

They were sending the crude oil through the pipeline towards the new refinery.
Ei trimiteau țițeiul prin conductă spre rafinăria nouă.

At the refinery, the main action is a prelucra (to process).

The refinery started to process the fuel immediately.
Rafinăria a început să prelucreze combustibilul imediat.

Gas and Drilling

Alongside oil, the industry relies on gazul (the gas) and the physical act of drilling, a fora.

During the extraction, they continued to drill.
The woman no longer processes the gas that flows through the pipeline.

Combining Resources

Apply familiar conjunctions like atât... cât și... (both... and...) and nici..., nici... (neither... nor...) to group these industrial materials.

Both the crude oil and the gas arrive at the refinery.
Neither the gas nor the oil is in the pipeline.
