Pupil and student
Romanian keeps two words apart. A child at school is an elev; someone at university is a student. The university itself is universitatea; one of its schools is a facultate.
| at school | at university | |
|---|---|---|
| the learner | elevul | studentul |
| the place | școala | universitatea |
| one class | lecția | cursul |
| My son is a very good pupil. | Fiul meu este un elev foarte bun. |
| My sister studies at the university. | Sora mea studiază la universitate. |
The lesson
A lecție is one lesson — at school, or a lesson you learn from life. Its plural is lecții. To learn a lesson is a învăța lecția.
| I learned the lesson for the exam. | Am învățat lecția pentru examen. |
| The pupils have a break after the lesson. | Elevii au o pauză după lecție. |
Why we study
With pentru a you can already say what you study for:
| I want to study at university in order to become a doctor. | Vreau să studiez la universitate pentru a deveni medic. |
