Reciprocal pronouns (unul pe altul)

Reciprocal Actions (Each Other)

To express that two or more people do something to each other, Romanian uses plural reflexive pronouns (like ne, vă, or se) together with a reciprocal phrase.

For masculine or mixed-gender groups, use the phrase unul pe altul. Notice that it includes the direct object marker pe in the middle, literally meaning "one [on] another".

We are loyal and we support each other.
Suntem loiali și ne sprijinim unul pe altul.
It is good to encourage each other.
E bine să ne încurajăm unul pe altul.

Feminine Reciprocal Pronouns

Just like with indefinite pronouns, these reciprocal phrases must agree with the gender of the people involved. If you are talking about a group made up entirely of women or feminine nouns, use una pe alta.

They are honest and they protect each other.
Ele sunt sincere și se protejează una pe alta.
The female colleagues encourage and protect each other.
Colegele se încurajează și se protejează una pe alta.

Working Across Tenses

This construction works exactly the same way in the past, present, or imperfect tenses. The reflexive verb changes tense as usual, while unul pe altul (or una pe alta) stays the same at the end of the sentence to emphasize the mutual action.

They have a common problem, so they advise each other.
Ei au o problemă comună, deci se sfătuiesc unul pe altul.
During the common project, we used to advise each other.
În timpul proiectului comun, ne sfătuiam unul pe altul.
We overcame the obstacle because we helped each other.
Noi am depășit obstacolul pentru că ne-am ajutat unul pe altul.
