Past narration

Past Narration: Setting the Scene vs. Interrupting the Action

When telling a story about the past, Romanian frequently contrasts two tenses: the Imperfect (Imperfectul) and the Perfect Compus.

  • The Imperfect is used for background information, ongoing situations, or actions that were already in progress (equivalent to the English past continuous, like "was sleeping" or "was raining").
  • The Perfect Compus is used for sudden, completed events that interrupt the background state (equivalent to the English simple past, like "started", "stopped", or "hit").

"While" and the Imperfect

To set the scene for a story, you will often use the phrase în timp ce (while). Because this phrase describes an ongoing situation, the verb that immediately follows it is almost always in the Imperfect. The sudden action that happens during this background state is then placed in the Perfect Compus.

While I was sleeping, the rain started.
În timp ce dormeam, a început ploaia.
While the man was reading the newspaper, the thief stole his wallet.
În timp ce bărbatul citea ziarul, hoțul i-a furat portofelul.

"Suddenly" and the Perfect Compus

Conversely, words like când (when) and dintr-odată (suddenly) usually introduce the interrupting action, putting the spotlight on a specific, completed event. Verbs paired with these words will naturally be in the Perfect Compus.

suddenly
dintr-odată
I was watching TV when the power suddenly went out.
Mă uitam la televizor când dintr-odată s-a oprit curentul.
I was having a nightmare, but suddenly I woke up.
Aveam un coșmar, dar dintr-odată m-am trezit.

Bringing It Together

Look at how seamlessly these two tenses work together to paint a vivid picture of a past event. The Imperfect sets up the ongoing weather, action, or state, while the Perfect Compus delivers the sudden narrative plot point.

It was raining very hard when the lightning hit the tree.
Ploua foarte tare când fulgerul a lovit copacul.
The dog was barking outside when a woman screamed.
Câinele lătra afară când o femeie a țipat.
The little girl was running in the park when she hurt her leg.
Fetița alerga în parc când s-a lovit la picior.
