Stacking Pronouns in the Past Tense
When you want to say "He gave it to me" in the past tense (Perfect Compus), the indirect object ("to me") and the direct object ("it") stack together right before the auxiliary verb.
Because Romanian loves efficiency, these short words contract. For masculine and neuter singular objects (îl), the î is dropped and the pronoun links to the auxiliary verb with a hyphen.
- mi l-a = to me + it + he/she [verb]
- ți l-a = to you + it + he/she [verb]
| The librarian found the manuscript. Did he bring it to you? | Bibliotecarul a găsit manuscrisul. Ți l-a adus? |
| Where is the catalog? The director updated it for you yesterday. | Unde este catalogul? Directorul ți l-a actualizat ieri. |
This works the same way for plural direct objects like le (them). They sit between the Dative pronoun and the auxiliary verb:
- i le-a = to him/her + them + he/she [verb]
| Although the volumes are old, he recommended them to him. | Deși volumele sunt vechi, el i le-a recomandat. |
The Feminine Singular Exception
The feminine singular direct object o (her/it) acts differently in the Perfect Compus. Instead of squeezing in before the auxiliary verb, it attaches to the very end of the past participle with a hyphen!
The indirect object (Dative pronoun) stays at the front, contracting directly with the auxiliary verb.
- mi-a [verb]-o = to me + he/she [verb] + it (feminine)
- i-a [verb]-o = to him/her + he/she [verb] + it (feminine)
| Did you classify the collection? No, my colleague classified it for me. | Ai clasificat colecția? Nu, colega mea mi-a clasificat-o. |
| She studied the collection and presented it to him. | Ea a studiat colecția și i-a prezentat-o. |
Other Auxiliary Forms
The direct objects îl and le can contract with all forms of the auxiliary verb (such as am, ai, and au). The word order logic remains the same: Dative + Direct Object + Auxiliary.
- ți l-am = to you + it + I [verb]
- mi l-ai = to me + it + you [verb]
- ți l-au = to you + it + they [verb]
| I made the inventory for the archive and I sent it to you. | Am făcut inventarul pentru arhivă și ți l-am trimis. |
| If you registered the manuscript, why didn't you leave it for me? | Dacă ai înregistrat manuscrisul, de ce nu mi l-ai lăsat? |
| Did they finish the inventory? Yes, they already sent it to you. | Au terminat inventarul? Da, ți l-au trimis deja. |
