Parts of a House (Exterior)

Foundations and Concrete

Any good construction project starts from the ground up. The most important part is the foundation (temelia), which is often poured using concrete (betonul).

The team will build the building's foundation.
Echipa va construi temelia clădirii.
The concrete for the foundation is very expensive.
Betonul pentru temelie este foarte scump.

Scaffolding and Walls

To work on the exterior walls, builders will assemble a scaffold (schela). This allows them to easily reach the exterior plaster (tencuiala) to clean or repair it.

The worker climbs on the high scaffold.
Muncitorul urcă pe schela înaltă.
From the scaffold, he is repairing the house's plaster.
De pe schelă, el repară tencuiala casei.

If the building has a balcony, it will also need a sturdy railing (balustrada).

She will paint the balcony's railing.
Ea va vopsi balustrada balconului.

The Roof and Chimney

At the very top of the house is the roof (acoperișul).

The heavy snow destroyed the old roof.
Zăpada grea a distrus acoperișul vechi.

A traditional roof is usually covered in roof tiles (țigla). You will also often find a chimney (hornul) to let smoke escape from the fireplace inside.

We will put the roof tiles on the roof.
Noi vom pune țiglele pe acoperiș.
Thick smoke is coming out through the house's chimney.
Fumul gros iese prin hornul casei.

Gutters and Thresholds

To protect the exterior from heavy rain, the roof needs a gutter (jgheabul) to direct water away. Finally, at the front door, every house has a threshold (pragul) that you step over to go inside.

Water is flowing from the gutter.
Apa curge din jgheab.
The dog is sleeping on the door's threshold.
Câinele doarme pe pragul ușii.
