Indefinite pronouns (cineva, ceva)

Indefinite Pronouns and Adverbs

When you need to refer to an unspecified thing, person, or place, Romanian uses indefinite pronouns and adverbs. They are straightforward and do not change form depending on gender or number:

  • ceva (something)
  • cineva (someone)
  • undeva (somewhere)
I want to tell you something important.
Vreau să vă spun ceva important.
I hear a strange noise, is someone in the house?
Aud un zgomot ciudat, este cineva în casă?
The dog is hiding somewhere in the garden.
Câinele se ascunde undeva în grădină.
Something is moving and making noise.
Ceva se mișcă și face zgomot.

Expressing "Else"

To talk about an alternative person or thing, simply add alt- to the beginning of the pronoun:

  • altceva (something else)
  • altcineva (someone else)
Do you want to order something else?
Doriți să comandați altceva?
I do not want this pen, I want something else.
Nu vreau acest pix, vreau altceva.
Can someone else help me with the project?
Poate să mă ajute altcineva cu proiectul?
