If
Dacă opens a condition. With something that can really happen, both halves stay in the present tense — where English sometimes uses will, Romanian does not.
| If you want, we can leave now. | Dacă vrei, putem pleca acum. |
| If you are free, we'll go to the market. | Dacă ești liber, mergem la piață. |
The dacă clause can also come second:
| I sleep if I am tired. | Dorm dacă sunt obosit. |
Whether
After ști (and other verbs of knowing and asking), dacă means whether. Use it for a yes/no question inside a sentence — where a wh-question would use unde, ce or când.
| I don't know whether he is at home. | Nu știu dacă este acasă. |
| Do you know if the store is open? | Știi dacă magazinul este deschis? |
| Știu că e acasă. | I know (that) he is at home. |
| Nu știu dacă e acasă. | I don't know whether he is at home. |
| Nu știu unde e. | I don't know where he is. |
