When discussing professional roles, committee positions, or temporary functions, Romanian uses two primary expressions to say "as a [role]". In both cases, the noun that follows is "bare"—meaning you do not translate the English indefinite article ("a" or "an").
The preposition ca (as)
The most common way to express your role or function is to use the preposition ca immediately followed by the profession or title.
| As president, he chaired the committee in order to clarify the situation. | Ca președinte, el a prezidat comisia pentru a clarifica situația. |
| As an observer, you cannot represent this group. | Ca observator, nu poți reprezenta acest grup. |
În calitate de (in the capacity of)
For a more formal or official tone, particularly on administrative boards or in legal contexts, use the phrase în calitate de.
| in the capacity of (role) | în calitate de |
Like ca, this expression is followed directly by the noun without an indefinite article.
| In the capacity of advisor, she helped the auditor. | În calitate de consilier, ea l-a ajutat pe auditor. |
| In his capacity as mayor, he approved the budget. | În calitate de primar, a aprobat bugetul. |
Adding modifiers
You can attach adjectives or other modifiers to the role, such as interimar (interim) or a genitive phrase like al comisiei (of the committee). The core rule remains the same: no indefinite article.
| As interim administrator, he would have an increasingly big responsibility. | În calitate de administrator interimar, el ar avea o responsabilitate tot mai mare. |
| As a member of the committee, she recommended that specialist to me. | Ca membru al comisiei, ea mi l-a recomandat pe acel specialist. |
