Expressing Purpose (in order to)
When you want to state the reason or motive behind an action—"in order to" or simply "to" do something—Romanian uses the phrase pentru a followed by a verb in the infinitive.
| in order to (+ infinitive) | pentru a |
| I read a lot in order to obtain a good grade. | Citesc mult pentru a obține o notă bună. |
| I want to learn in order to advance at work. | Vreau să învăț pentru a avansa la serviciu. |
Reflexive Verbs with "pentru a"
When your goal involves a reflexive verb, like a se dezvolta (to develop oneself), the reflexive pronoun must match the person performing the action. This pronoun is placed directly between pentru a and the infinitive verb.
| Person | Reflexive Phrase | English Equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| eu (I) | pentru a mă dezvolta | in order to develop myself |
| tu (you) | pentru a te dezvolta | in order to develop yourself |
| el/ea (he/she) | pentru a se dezvolta | in order to develop himself/herself |
| noi (we) | pentru a ne dezvolta | in order to develop ourselves |
| Can you study in order to develop yourself personally? | Poți să studiezi pentru a te dezvolta personal? |
| Maria reads in order to develop herself personally. | Maria citește pentru a se dezvolta personal. |
Connecting Multiple Goals
You can use pentru a to discuss broader life goals, such as professional success or financial independence. When connecting multiple purposes, you can repeat pentru a for clarity. Note that adjectives like independent must still agree in number and gender with the subject.
| I save money in order to be financially independent. | Economisesc bani pentru a fi independent financiar. |
| We work a lot in order to develop ourselves and in order to be financially independent. | Lucrăm mult pentru a ne dezvolta și pentru a fi independenți financiar. |
