Expressing Probability with "Poate că" and "Probabil că"
When you want to express doubt, likelihood, or probability about a situation, Romanian uses phrases like poate că (maybe) and probabil că (probably).
A helpful feature of these expressions is that they are followed by the indicative mood—the normal present, past, and future tenses you already know. Unlike some other expressions of doubt or necessity, you do not need to use the subjunctive mood here.
Use poate că to state that something might happen, such as a personal decision or a future event.
For situations that are highly likely, use probabil că. You can use these phrases with any tense to speculate about current trends or past events.
Verbs of Assumption
Similarly, when you make assumptions or express how things appear to you, you can use verbs like a presupune (to assume) or phrases like mi se pare (it seems to me). Just like the adverbs above, these are followed by că (that) and a standard indicative verb.
Discussing Trends and Society
You will frequently use these structures of probability and assumption when discussing broader topics, such as the economy, society, and technological evolution. Combine them with descriptive adjectives to share your outlook.
