Candidates and Parties
Welcome to Election Day! Let's learn the vocabulary to talk about campaigns, candidates, and voting.
To run for office is a candida. Candidates usually belong to a political party (partidul).
When discussing politics, you will often need conjunctions to express conditions, reasons, and alternatives. Here are three useful phrases:
- ori de câte ori means "whenever" or "every time".
- ca să means "to" or "in order to".
- fie... fie means "either... or".
| She decided to run for office again. | Ea a decis să candideze din nou. |
| Whenever she wants to run for office, the political party supports her. | Ori de câte ori vrea să candideze, partidul o sprijină. |
| This political party is too small to win alone. | Acest partid este prea mic ca să învingă singur. |
| Either the political party wins, or the government falls. | Fie partidul câștigă, fie guvernul cade. |
At the Ballot Box
On election day, the voter (alegătorul) heads to the ballot box (urna). Some elections are decided in a single day, while others require a runoff or a second round (turul).
| Every voter goes towards the ballot box. | Fiecare alegător merge spre urnă. |
| The ballot boxes open in an hour. | Urnele se deschid peste o oră. |
| In the second round we will find out who won. | În al doilea tur o să aflăm cine a câștigat. |
Politicians and the System
Who are you voting for? You might be electing a deputy (deputatul) or a senator (senatorul).
| The deputy voted for a new law today. | Deputatul a votat pentru o lege nouă astăzi. |
| Either Mrs. Popescu or the senator will run for office. | Fie doamna Popescu, fie senatorul o să candideze. |
After the election, parties might form a coalition (coaliția) to lead the government. Of course, the opposition will be watching closely, hoping for a transparent (transparent) process without fraud (frauda).
| We are sure that this coalition will win. | Suntem siguri că această coaliție o să câștige. |
| The opposition declared that there was a fraud. | Opoziția a declarat că a existat o fraudă. |
| The coalition promises that everything will be transparent. | Coaliția promite că totul o să fie transparent. |
