Expressing Desires with "A vrea"
To express what you want to do in Romanian, use the verb a vrea (to want).
Unlike the impersonal trebuie from the previous lesson, a vrea must be conjugated to match the person who wants to do the action:
| Person | A vrea |
|---|
| Eu (I) | vreau |
| Tu (You) | vrei |
| El / Ea (He / She) | vrea |
| Noi (We) | vrem |
| Voi (You all) | vreți |
| Ei / Ele (They) | vor |
To talk about an action you want to take, follow your conjugated form of a vrea with the conjunction să and the main verb. Remember that the main verb after să is also conjugated to match the person doing the action.
Hoping and Succeeding
Other verbs expressing desires or intentions, such as a spera (to hope), work the exact same way as a vrea. They use să to connect to the next verb.
You will often use these structures to talk about professional or personal aspirations, like wanting to succeed (a reuși) or have success (succes).
Reflexive Verbs and Purpose
When the action you want to do is a reflexive verb—like moving or relocating (a se muta) or relaxing (a se relaxa)—the short reflexive pronoun must be placed exactly between să and the main verb.
To explain why you want to do something, you can use the phrase ca să (in order to / so that). It behaves just like a regular să, connecting to a conjugated verb to express the purpose behind your action.
Goals and Conditions
When making plans, you can easily tie your desires to real-world conditions using dacă (if) or by directly mentioning your goal (scopul).
