Taking care of a new baby comes with a whole new set of vocabulary. Let's learn the essential words for early parenthood, from arriving at the hospital to feeding and soothing.
The First Days
It all begins at maternitatea (the maternity ward).
| The girl arrived at the maternity ward by car. | Fata a ajuns la maternitate cu mașina. |
| The maternity ward where Radu was born is very near. | Maternitatea unde s-a născut Radu este foarte aproape. |
Once the baby is here, you will frequently use the term nou-născutul (the newborn).

Feeding and Changing
The verb for to breastfeed is a alăpta.
| My wife breastfeeds the baby twice at night. | Soția mea alăptează bebelușul de două ori noaptea. |
Alternatively, you might prepare milk using biberonul (the baby bottle).
| She uses the baby bottle because the baby is hungry. | Ea folosește biberonul pentru că bebelușul este flămând. |
Along with feeding comes the constant need to change scutecul (the diaper).

Soothing the Baby
When the baby cries, one helpful item is suzeta (the pacifier).

You can also try the verb a legăna (to rock) to help them fall asleep.

The goal is to use your voice or movement to soothe them, using the verb a calma (to calm).

Outings and Medical Care
For taking a walk outside, place the child in căruciorul (the stroller).

For regular check-ups, you will schedule visits with pediatrul (the pediatrician).
