Salons, Barbers, and Hairdressers
When it is time for a trim, you can visit salonul (the salon). In Romanian, there is often a distinction between a barbershop or barber—frizerul—which caters primarily to men, and coaforul, which caters primarily to women.
Note that coafor can refer to both the professional (the hairdresser) and the place itself (the hair salon).
| If you want, we will go to the new salon today. | Dacă vrei, vom merge la salonul nou astăzi. |
| My husband needs a good barber. | Soțul meu are nevoie de un frizer bun. |
| My hairdresser is very kind. | Coaforul meu este foarte amabil. |
Getting a Haircut
To say "to get a haircut," Romanian commonly uses the reflexive verb a se tunde. Even though someone else is cutting your hair, you use a reflexive pronoun, expressing that you are having the action done to yourself.
The noun for "haircut" is tunsoarea. If you are looking for a specific style, you might also ask for breton (bangs or a fringe). When talking about cutting bangs, you will often use the verb a tăia (to cut) rather than a tunde.
| He gets a haircut at this salon every month. | El se tunde la acest salon în fiecare lună. |
| I like your new haircut a lot! | Îmi place mult tunsoarea ta nouă! |
| The girl wants to cut her fringe. | Fata vrea să își taie bretonul. |
Styling and Coloring
To go beyond a simple haircut, you might want to dye your hair using the verb a vopsi.
For special occasions, you can ask for a specific coafură (hairstyle). To achieve these styles, a hairdresser will likely use a brush (peria) and might create curls (bucle).
| The woman will dye her hair blonde. | Femeia își va vopsi părul blond. |
| You need an appointment for the wedding hairstyle. | Ai nevoie de o programare pentru coafura de nuntă. |
| Can you make some curls? | Poți să faci niște bucle? |
| I need your brush to arrange my hair. | Am nevoie de peria ta ca să îmi aranjez părul. |
