Money: the ATM
A bancomat is a cash machine. You take money from it — de la bancomat — with your card. After a preposition the noun drops its article (lângă bancă, de la bancomat), exactly as with la școală or în casă.
Appointments
Programarea is an appointment you book in advance — at the dentist, the doctor, the hairdresser. You make one with a face: fac o programare. With la + a person, the noun loses its article: la dentist, la doctor.
A funcționar works in an office — at the city hall, the post office, the bank. Sooner or later every form asks for the same three things:
| Romanian | English |
|---|
| numele | the surname, the name |
| prenumele | the first name |
| cartea de identitate | the identity card (in everyday speech: buletinul) |
The post office and the bookshop
Careful with librăria: it is a bookshop, where you buy books. A library, where you borrow them, is biblioteca. A postcard is o carte poștală — literally a postal card.
Emergencies
O urgență is an emergency, and la urgență is where you go with one: the hospital's emergency room. Fires are for the pompieri, the firefighters.
The permis de conducere (driver's license) and your număr de telefon — the possessive goes in the middle again: numărul *tău de telefon*.
