In Portuguese, descriptive words (adjectives) usually come right after the noun they describe. So instead of putting the color first like in English, you literally say house yellow.

Why is the word for yellow spelled amarela instead of amarelo?

Adjectives must match the gender of the noun they describe. Since casa is a feminine noun, the masculine adjective amarelo changes its ending to an a to become the feminine amarela.

Since casa is feminine, why doesn't grande change to end in an a?

Adjectives that end in the letter e, like grande, are gender-neutral. They keep the exact same form for both masculine and feminine nouns.

Why does this sentence use é for is rather than está?
