Why does the word for actors, atores, end in -es instead of just an -s?
In Portuguese, words that end in the consonant -r (like the singular ator) form their plural by adding -es. That is why it becomes atores.
The word hotel ends in an -l. If they were in multiple hotels, how would that plural work?
For words ending in -l, you drop the -l and add -is. The plural of hotel is hotéis (notice it also gains an accent!). However, in this sentence they are all in one single hotel, so we use the singular form.
