The historical present (Presente Histórico)

The Historical Present (Presente Histórico)

When telling a story about something that happened in the past, Portuguese speakers frequently switch into the present tense. This everyday storytelling technique is called the historical present (presente histórico).

By using the present tense for past events, you make your narrative feel much more vivid, immediate, and dramatic—as if the listener is right there experiencing the action with you.

Usually, the context or a specific time word establishes that the story happened in the past, but the verbs themselves remain in the present tense to kick off the story.

the rush
a correria
Yesterday, I wake up late and the rush begins.
Ontem, acordo atrasado e começa a correria.

Building the Action

This technique is perfect for recounting fast-paced or chaotic sequences, such as a frantic morning commute. Stringing together present-tense action verbs creates a breathless pace that carries your listener along.

I wake up late, look at that clock, and leave the house in a great hurry.
Acordo atrasado, olho para aquele relógio e saio de casa com muita pressa.
I validate the ticket quickly and go down to the platform.
Valido o bilhete rapidamente e desço para a plataforma.

Delivering the Climax and Emotion

The historical present is especially effective when delivering the climax of a story or a sudden event. When things go wrong, describing your reactions in the present tense makes the disappointment feel raw and relatable.

Suddenly, the train driver whistles, and the doors close.
Subitamente, o maquinista apita e as portas fecham-se.
The train pulls away, and I stay there, helpless and dazed.
O comboio arranca e eu fico ali, impotente e atordoado.
I look at that empty track and curse my misfortune.
Olho para aquela linha vazia e amaldiçoo a minha desgraça.

Whether you are recounting a genuinely disastrous morning or just waking up from a stressful dream, slipping into the presente histórico is a natural, highly native-sounding way to tell your tale.

Suddenly, another train whistles and I wake up in my bed; after all, it is all a nightmare!
Subitamente, apita outro comboio e acordo na minha cama; afinal é tudo um pesadelo!
