Prefixes of time, location, and hierarchy (pré-, pós-, sub-, sobre-)

The Prefix pré- (Before)

In the highly organized world of logistics and supply chains, timing is everything. The prefix pré- indicates that an action or state happens "before" something else, acting just like the English "pre-". Note that in Portuguese, stressed prefixes like pré- and pós- are always connected to the base word with a hyphen.

Did you receive the advance notice upon arriving at the warehouse?
Recebeste o pré-aviso ao chegar ao armazém?
Everyone who buys this product knows that it is prepackaged.
Todos quantos compram este produto sabem que é pré-embalado.

The Prefix pós- (After)

Conversely, the prefix pós- means "after." It is frequently used to describe phases, services, or events that follow a main operation (similar to the English "post-").

The after-sales resolves everything that you ask for.
O pós-venda resolve tudo quanto tu pedes.

The Prefix sub- (Under, Lower, or Secondary)

The prefix sub- can denote a physical location ("under"), a lower position in a workplace hierarchy, or a secondary action. For most words, this prefix attaches directly to the base word without a hyphen.

The carrier is going to subcontract more drivers, since there is a lot of work.
A transportadora vai subcontratar mais motoristas, visto que há muito trabalho.
Upon speaking with the assistant manager, I understood the crisis.
Ao falar com o subgerente, percebi a crise.
You underestimate the quantity of packages that we send.
Subestimas a quantidade de pacotes que enviamos.

The Prefix sobre- (Over or Excess)

To express something that is "above" or goes beyond normal limits, Portuguese uses the prefix sobre- (similar to "over-" or "sur-" in English). In a warehouse or transport setting, this often relates to excess weight, tasks, or costs.

You must never underestimate an overload in the warehouse.
Nunca deves subestimar uma sobrecarga no armazém.
We are going to overload the truck, unless we take out this pallet.
Vamos sobrecarregar o camião, exceto se tirarmos esta palete.
The client pays the surcharge, since the order is urgent.
O cliente paga a sobretaxa, uma vez que a encomenda é urgente.

Time Shifts: pós-laboral

Let's look at one more highly useful term with pós-. A common professional concept in Portugal is the horário pós-laboral, which refers to the "after-hours" period once the standard workday has ended.

There are increasingly fewer workers in the after-hours schedule.
Há cada vez menos funcionários no horário pós-laboral.
