Textbook Portuguese and Lisbon-street Portuguese overlap, but the street has its own basics — all perfectly normal in informal speech:

**fixe** and **o gajo** are hallmarks of European Portuguese — Brazil says *legal* and *cara* instead. *Gajo* is fine among friends, too casual for the office.

**o papá** and **a mamã** are what children (and adults talking to children) call their parents — the affectionate register beside *o pai* and *a mãe*.
