The words people actually say

Textbook Portuguese and Lisbon-street Portuguese overlap, but the street has its own basics — all perfectly normal in informal speech:

fixe and o gajo are hallmarks of European Portuguese — Brazil says legal and cara instead. Gajo is fine among friends, too casual for the office.

Family, at home

o papá and a mamã are what children (and adults talking to children) call their parents — the affectionate register beside o pai and a mãe.

Ai! is pain (Ai, o meu pé!) or dismay (Ai, que vergonha!).
