Turning Verbs into Nouns
In Portuguese, you can transform an action into a concept—effectively using a verb as a noun—by placing the masculine singular definite article o before an infinitive verb. This process is called substantivation.
In English, this is often expressed using a gerund (a verb ending in "-ing"). Using the infinitive as a noun adds a reflective, philosophical, or formal tone to your sentences.

Modifying the Infinitive
Because the infinitive now functions as a noun, you can modify it with adjectives. Since you are using the article o, any adjectives describing this new "noun" must also be masculine and singular.
| Superficial talking has to stop. | O falar superficial tem de acabar. |
| Constant questioning gives meaning to existence. | O questionar constante dá sentido à existência. |
| Deep meditating pushes away the illusion. | O meditar profundo afasta a ilusão. |
Expressing Abstract Concepts
When discussing topics like meaning, existence, and the human condition, treating verbs as nouns allows you to speak broadly about universal actions and experiences. These infinitives can serve as the subject of your sentence or as the object of a verb.
