Meaning to Do Something
Portuguese expresses delayed intentions—actions you have been meaning to do but keep postponing—using the verb andar paired with the preposition para.
To build this structure, conjugate andar in the present tense and add para, followed by the main verb in the infinitive.
| He has been meaning to buy a new frame. | Ele anda para comprar uma armação nova. |
| We have been meaning to take this coat to the dry cleaner's. | Andamos para levar este casaco à lavandaria. |
| I have been meaning to polish these shoes, but I always forget. | Ando para engraxar estes sapatos, mas esqueço-me sempre. |
Specifying How Long
To emphasize exactly how long you have been putting a task off, add a time expression to the beginning of the sentence.
Start with há, followed by the period of time, and connect it to the rest of the sentence with que.
| I have been meaning to go to the optician for two weeks. | Há duas semanas que ando para ir ao oculista. |
| I have been meaning to trim my eyebrows for three days. | Há três dias que ando para aparar as minhas sobrancelhas. |
| He has been meaning to change the car's oil for a month. | Há um mês que ele anda para mudar o óleo do carro. |
