Questions & Answers about Żaden producent nie ma teraz tego towaru.
Why does the sentence use both Żaden and nie?
Polish requires strict double negation. If you use a negative word like żaden (no/none), nikt (nobody), or nigdy (never), you must also negate the main verb with nie. While English says "No manufacturer has...", Polish literally says "No manufacturer does not have...".
Why is the object tego towaru in the genitive case?
The verb mieć (to have) usually takes a direct object in the accusative case. However, whenever a verb that takes the accusative is negated, its direct object must flip to the genitive case. Since we have nie ma, the object becomes tego towaru. Even though your current lesson focuses on the genitive following prepositions like od, remember that negation is another major trigger for the genitive!
The English translation says "these goods" (plural), but tego towaru is singular. Why?
In Polish, towar (merchandise/goods) is most commonly used as a singular, uncountable noun when talking about a type of product or a general supply of items. English prefers the plural "goods" for this exact same concept.
What gender and case is Żaden taking here?
Żaden behaves just like an adjective, meaning it must match the noun it modifies. Here it is in the nominative case because it is part of the subject, and it is masculine to match producent (manufacturer).
