Questions & Answers about Gdzie jest ta talia kart?
What does talia mean here, and does it have other common meanings?
In this context, talia means a "deck" (of cards). However, it is also the Polish word for "waist" (the part of the human body). You can easily tell which meaning is intended from the context, especially with the word kart (cards) right next to it!
Why is the word for cards spelled kart here instead of karty?
Kart is the genitive plural form of the feminine noun karta (card). We use the genitive case here to mean "of cards" (a deck of cards). As a quick refresher: for most feminine nouns ending in -a, the genitive plural is formed by simply dropping that final -a, which turns karta into kart.
How do the reified numerals from this lesson (like piątka or dziesiątka) relate to a deck of cards?
Reified numerals (feminine nouns formed from numbers) are exactly what Polish uses to name the number cards in a deck! If you are playing a game and need a "five" or a "ten", you use these specific nouns. For example, if you wanted to ask "Where is the ten?", you would say "Gdzie jest ta dziesiątka?".
Why do we use ta before talia?
Ta means "this" and is the feminine nominative form of the demonstrative pronoun. Because talia is a feminine noun and acts as the subject of the sentence (nominative case), the pronoun pointing to it must match its gender and case.
