Questions & Answers about Nie wiem, czy ten komentarz ma duży zasięg.
Why is "if" translated as czy here instead of jeśli?
In English, "if" does double duty. In Polish, czy is used for indirect yes/no questions, meaning "whether" (I don't know whether this comment...). Jeśli or jeżeli are strictly used for conditions (If X happens, then Y). Since this is an indirect question, you must use czy.
Is zasięg in the Nominative case here?
It looks exactly like the Nominative, but it's actually in the Accusative case because it's the direct object of the verb ma (has). For masculine inanimate nouns like zasięg (reach/range), the Accusative form is identical to the Nominative.
The sentence starts with Nie wiem (negation). Why doesn't duży zasięg change to the Genitive case?
The "Genitive of negation" rule only applies to the direct object of the specific negated verb. Here, the negation nie only affects the verb wiem. The second clause has its own positive verb, ma, so its object (zasięg) remains in the Accusative.
How else is the word zasięg used in everyday Polish?
Beyond the "reach" of a social media post, zasięg is most commonly used for cell phone reception, Wi-Fi, or network coverage. If you want to say "I don't have service" or "I have no signal", you would say Nie mam zasięgu.
