Why does Polish use two different words, im and tym, when English just says "the ... the ..."?
In English, the same word is used for both halves of the comparison. Polish requires im to introduce the condition (the faster) and tym to introduce the result (the more). They always work together as a pair in this structure.
Why is the word for time spelled czasu here instead of czas?
The word czasu is in the genitive case. In Polish, quantifiers like więcej (more) or mniej (less) require the following noun to be in the genitive case. You can think of it as saying "more of time".
Is the word order strict in these im ..., tym ... sentences?
The most important rule is that the comparative words must sit directly next to im and tym. That is why we say Im szybciej and tym więcej. The verbs (pracujesz, masz) usually follow right after this pairing.
Why use szybciej instead of the adjective szybszy?
You need the adverb szybciej because it describes the verb pracujesz (how you work). You would only use the adjective szybszy if you were describing a noun, like saying someone is a faster worker.
