Questions & Answers about W weekend zasypiam później, ale budzę się wcześniej.
How are the comparative adverbs później and wcześniej formed from their basic words?
The basic adverbs are późno (late) and wcześnie (early). To make a regular adverb comparative (meaning "more" or "-er"), we usually drop the final vowel and add the ending -iej or -ej. For późno, we drop the -o and add -iej to get później. For wcześnie, we drop the -e and add -ej to get wcześniej.
What is the difference between zasypiam and śpię?
Both verbs relate to sleep, but they describe different things. śpię (from the verb spać) describes the ongoing state of sleeping, meaning "I sleep" or "I am sleeping". zasypiam (from the verb zasypiać) describes the transition, meaning "I fall asleep". Because this sentence is about the specific time the person goes to sleep, zasypiam is used.
Why is it w weekend and not the Locative case w weekendzie?
When we want to say "on a specific day" or "on the weekend", Polish uses the preposition w followed by the Accusative case. Because weekend is a masculine inanimate noun, its Accusative form looks exactly like its basic dictionary form. You would only use the Locative case with w if you were talking about being physically located inside something.
Why does budzę have się next to it, but zasypiam doesn't?
The base verb budzić means "to wake (someone else) up". To say that you wake yourself up, you have to add the reflexive pronoun się, making it budzić się. On the other hand, zasypiać (to fall asleep) is a complete action that just happens to you and doesn't take a direct object, so it doesn't need się.
